Journées de la culture 2020 : 1,001 Cultural Occupations
Entering the world of traditional and contemporary jewellery
For the 2020 edition of the Journées de la culture, the École de joaillerie de Montréal is pleased to welcome the public on Saturday, September 26. First, 16 participants* will have the chance to take part in a silver band ring fabrication workshop, and at the same time, visitors will be invited to discover the exhibition Misconceived by jeweller Kim Paquet, a 2017 graduate of the ÉJM, which will be presented in the gallery space until October 9. Combining creation with her unique background in social work, Kim Paquet uses the aesthetics of street art to explore notions of marginalization and precariousness through portable objects. Her jewellery works as a witness to various traumas, celebrating their imprint on the wearer. “This is the scary truth about trauma: There is no such a thing as ‘’getting over it.’’ The reality is much bigger: a major life disruption leaves a new norm in its wake. But it is not a negative thing. The goal of a recovery is also being aware of our strength and being opened to change. To preserve or present thing as normal, healing from trauma is not a papering-over. It is to acknowledge and wear your new life with a total new understanding. »
