From February 21st to March 18th, ÉJM’s gallery space will present the exhibition The Intangibility of Identity, which will feature works by 8 established and emerging artists : Simon Cottrell (Australia), Magali Thibault-Gobeil (QC), Laura Sasseville (QC), Marie-Eve G. Castonguay (QC), Danielle Van Patter (QC), Elin Weinstein (QC), Leyla Ghiastalab (QC/Iran) and Alex Kinsley Vey (ON). This exhibition is the result of a four-day workshop led by internationally renowned Australian contemporary jewellery artist Simon Cottrell, in July 2018.
Cottrell has presented his jewellery in over 150 exhibitions, and his works are held in major public and private collections internationally. He has been invited to present lectures and workshops across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Underpinning his creative practice, for the last twenty years has been extensive research into the interrelationships between wilful reasoning and structured improvisation within creative process. Since 2011 this research has continued as a Professor / Researcher in the Jewellery & Object Workshop at the School of Art & Design, Australian National University.
As he was visiting Montreal on the occasion of the exhibition Aurora Australis, Contemporary Jewellery from Australia, at Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h (curator: Katie Scott, Gallery Funaki), the École de joaillerie de Montréal invited Simon Cottrell to present his workshop Building the Intangible.
“What might happen if jewellers considered the end-point of their creative process, not as the jewellery object, but rather as the wearer’s / viewer’s perceptions, directed via the jewellery object? The ‘Building the Intangible’ workshop aims to critically explore the way we want our works to be sensed, and then perceived, by others. The workshop is aimed at unveiling the fundamental priorities of each individual’s creative goals, then, using the insights gained to more carefully direct a wearers’ responses through jewellery making.”
– Simon Cottrell
The exhibition, which is part of MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE festival and Nuit blanche, is accompanied by a catalogue, which will be available at the École de joaillerie de Montréal from February 21st.
